Because of my autistic issues and fatigue I have discovered all the conditions my symptoms fit are either proven or suspected to be autoimmune diseases, which could be influenced by vaccines. Golf War syndrome connected with the anthrax shot I had in the army is speculated as possibly an autoimmune disease. My reactions to flu and colds would make me speculate that my genes made me likely to get it and vaccines, toxins, or actual germs may make it worse. The real answer is that many biological chemicals and processes are involved with the immune system and other body functions like in the nervous system that only a fool would say it was black and white, except for extremes like certain toxins which normally make people sick or kill at higher levels. And yes, science is too easily influenced by politics for profit and other reasons. But in the end politics often pays the price when the real truth is determined.

In response to the previous post, I can't possibly imagine a surgeon would type out such a comment without grammatical accuracy or punctuation. You would have to make a more convincing argument than that.

Anyways, my opinion is that these drugs should be available for those who wish to take them. Those who do decide to take these enhancers should do so at their own risk and understand the consequences of using them. Also, I don't see much of a difference between using cognitive enhancers and drinking caffeine/tea/energy drinks to give that extra boost of energy and concentration. Even in coffee, someone can overdose on caffeine, causing a seizure. In much of everything we intake, the dosage matters. Like Paracelsus said, everything can be a poison. The difference between a poison and a remedy is the dose.

This whole autism-vaccine link has taken on a life of its own. It's alarming to see that this is sometimes described with an agenda that differs from protecting the population's health. If an individual chooses to not give their child a vaccine it is their choice but they should make a properly informed decision. A decision based on hysterical claims about censorship and propaganda is dangerous for the family and society as a whole. They also need to truly understand the public health risk of refusing vaccines. This social concern seems to be glossed over by concerned parents in a lack of understanding about the costs/benefits of vaccines.

Ultimately, I think this really concerns scientific literacy and the dissemination of scientific information in society. Understanding scientific information is central to health decisions and the health decisions a population makes have dramatic consequences for that society. One only needs to look at the rates of obesity and how this will burden society as a whole in coming years.

The use of vaccines is important for controlling and eradicating disease. Misinformation about this that convinces parents to forgo vaccines is dangerous.

Thank you for this article. It definitely provides food for thought!

I agree. It is probably just coincidence of the successes of certain letters. Those letters could change 100 years from now. Stick with names that sound good with the last name is what I say. When my son gets a job he needs to answer the phone by saying his first and last name so I didn't want him to hate me with a funky combination. Keep that in mind!

Hi Tiffany,
Collateral literally means side-by-side. In the first quote, "collaterals" seem to be a short-hand for "collateral branches". A single axon will send out several collateral branches, which increase its capacity to innervate. You can check out a good description in this Nature article:

Hi JC, thank you.

I think collaterals means branches, from what I am gleaning. Here are two examples:

"Reticular formation nuclei receive input from the periphery via collaterals from sensory pathways and from many regions of the cerebral cortex, limbic structures, and cerebellum."

and here's another where I gleaned "branches."

"Long ascending and descending axons, with numerous collateral branches, originate from medical column neurons. These terminate in other regions of the reticular formation, limbic structures, hypothalamus, thalamus, cranial nerve nuclei, and the spinal cord."

Hi Tiffany,
Can you provide an example? "Collaterals" can mean a lot of things.
Thanks,
